The town of San Carlos de Bariloche represents the gateway to Patagonia. Get to Bariloche from anywhere in the world by going either to Buenos Aires (Argentina) or Santiago de Chile, and taking one of the several weekly two-hour flights from either city. Located in northern Patagonia, Bariloche is connected to other major tourist destinations such as El Calafate, Ushuaia and Península de Valdés by means of its International Airport, which lies just 11 miles out of town. In July and August, during the winter season, the number of incoming flights increases due to charter flights from the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Another way to reach Bariloche is from Puerto Montt, by means of the journey known as International Andean Lakes Crossing, which involves sailing three lakes: Todos los Santos in Chile, and Frías and Nahuel Huapi in Argentina, with a bus carrying passengers between lakes. The closest frontier pass is Cardenal Samoré, which is open all year round. An entirely paved mountain road connects Osorno (Chile) to Villa La Angostura and Bariloche (Argentina). |
